The Dordogne and Lot et Garonne were at the centre of the 100 years war between the French and the English in the 1400's, with great swathes of the area controlled by the English resulting in Bastide towns and more than our fair share of Chateaux. Whilst staying at House on the Hill, you can visit many in the local area.

From its rocky outcrop, Bonaguil dominates the landscape and the surrounding village with its huge proportions and its keep, drawbridge and cave. Located 1 hour from House on the Hill.

This privately owned 15th century Chateau, in the heart of the Monbazillac vineyard and with its 15 furnished rooms, underground prison and 100 yesteryear games including armor fitting, crossbow shooting and the 19th century stables with horses,ponies and the biggest rabbits you've ever seen! 25 minutes from House on the Hill.

CHATEAU MONBAZILLAC

A chateau if you’re interested in the wine of this area and particularly the world renowned name of Monbazillac then this may be of interest to you. A tour of the Vineyard is also possible. Book ahead.  30 minutes from House on the Hill. Maybe combine with a trip to the Quai Cyrano in Bergerac and maybe a boat ride up the river?



Chateau of the Dukes of Duras

CHATEAU OF THE DUKES OF DURAS

Extensively restored castle located 25 minutes from House on the Hill. Frequent events with a lovely village attached with great views across the valley. Stop at Monteton on the way to or from Duras for an equally great view from this small village.
